Abstract

This research investigates the diverse language styles used in the movie "A Man Called Otto" and examines how these styles contribute to character development, narrative depth, and the audience's understanding of interpersonal dynamics. The primary aim is to explore how the strategic use of language styles influences the perception of characters and enriches the storyline. The study employs a qualitative approach, analyzing the characters' dialogues to identify and categorize the prevalent language styles. The analysis is guided by Martin Joos's framework, focusing on three key styles: formal, consultative, and casual. The collected data were analyzed by examining the contexts in which these language styles were used, emphasizing how they reflect the characters' personalities, relationships, and interactions. Examples from the movie are used to illustrate the impact of each style on the narrative and character development. The research reveals that Otto's frequent use of the formal style emphasizes his authoritative and distant personality, aligning with his complex relationships. In contrast, Marisol's casual style fosters warmth and approachability, creating a stark contrast that highlights the dynamics between the characters. The consultative style, appearing in advisory or semi-formal contexts, serves as a bridge between formality and informality, showcasing versatility in communication and facilitating understanding. Additionally, the study highlights the practical value of these language styles for English learners, demonstrating their real-life applications in various social and professional contexts. The findings conclude that the deliberate use of language styles in "A Man Called Otto" enhances character portrayal and narrative engagement while offering practical insights for language education. By teaching both formal and informal communication skills, educators can better prepare learners to navigate diverse social situations effectively. This study contributes to the field of language education by providing concrete examples of how language styles can shape and reflect social relationships.
