Abstract

Looking at the current conditions in schools in learning English, some students already have the enthusiasm to learn, but there are still some students who are still lazy to learn English. All this is inseparable from the role of a teacher in providing learning motivation to students. The Teacher's role is the behavior carried out by the teacher in carrying out learning activities. This study aims to analyze the teacher's role and the obstacles faced by the English teacher in improving students' learning motivation in English classes. Learning motivation is the encouragement of students to make changes in learning activities. This research used a research approach, namely a qualitative approach with a descriptive type of research. The data collection techniques used are observation and interviews. The participants of this research were the English teacher and tenth-grade students at MA Asy-Syukuriyah Payaman. The results showed that the English teacher's role includes the teacher as a controller, teacher as a motivator, teacher as a participant, teacher as a resource, and teacher as a tutor. Forms of motivation that can be given by the teacher include the teacher implementing fun learning, the teacher forming a study group, and giving praise to the students. The obstacles faced by the English teacher are caused by factors of limited learning time in the classroom and the main obstacles faced by the English teacher are caused by factors of students such as different levels of student comprehension ability. In addition, factors from the family and the school environment as well as the community around the students.
