Abstract

Speaking is one of the important English skills for students. This research aims to investigate students’ attitudes and experiences in practicing speaking by implementing WhatsApp voice notes during online teaching. The type of this research was qualitative. The participants of the research were 30 students at MA Daruth Thalibin, Bangilan, Tuban. This study used a closed questionnaire consisting of 20 statements online to determine students' attitudes towards learning speaking by applying WhatsApp voice notes during online teaching, the researcher also used interviews guideline and reflective journal instruments to assess student experiences. The results showed that most interviewees admitted that learning and practicing speaking using WhatsApp voice notes during online teaching was effective and comfortable despite some weaknesses. The results of the questionnaire support that 53,3% of survey respondents strongly agree, and 16,7% agreed that applying voice notes as an alternative learning media is easy to learning speaking during emergency remote teaching. From the result of interviews and reflective journals, students stated they were happy and enjoy and also want to continue using WhatsApp voice notes as a variety of learning media. This means that the dominant students have good experiences while learning and practicing speaking English using WhatsApp voice notes during online teaching.
