Abstract

Indonesia is a country that has high biodiversity and the culture of traditional medicine has been around for a long time and has been preserved for generations. Lemongrass (Cymbopogon citratus) and Basil (Ocimum bacilicum) are examples of plants that can be used as traditional medicine. The content of secondary metabolite compounds present in Citronella plants (Cymbopogon citratus) include alkaloids, tannins, saponins, flavonoids, phenols, steroids and essential oils. Meanwhile, the content of metabolites in Basil (Ocimum bacilicum) are essential oils, saponins, tannins, flavonoids, steroids, terpenoids, alkaloids, phenols, carbohydrates, lignin, starch and anthraquinones. From previous research, it was stated that the content of secondary metabolites in Citronella plants (Cymbopogon citratus) and Basil (Ocimum bacilicum) can be used as antipyretics. Herbal tea preparation is a modification of the use of lemongrass and basil plants as antipyretics. To determine the safety of the use of these herbal teas for humans, it is necessary to carry out toxicity tests of herbal tea preparations for Lemongrass (Cymbopogon citratus) and Basil (Ocimum bacilicum) in mice (Mus muscullus). The toxicity test was carried out using the method issued by BPOM in the 2020 Food and Drug Monitoring Agency (BPOM) Regulation concerning In Vivo Preclinical Toxicity Tests. The experimental doses are 5, 50, 300 and 2000 mg/kg BW. Giving herbal tea preparations to test animals cannot kill the test animals. The results of this study were the LD50 toxicity of the herbal tea preparations of Citronella (Cymbopogon citratus) and Basil (Ocimum bacilicum) obtained which were apparent LD50 values > 2000 mg/kg BW.
