Abstract

Traditional medicinal plants are plants obtained from nature that are trusted by previous generations and have been used and proven by the experiences of previous generations. Examples of medicinal plants in Indonesia are kitchen lemongrass (Cymbopogon citratus) and basil (Ocimum basilicum). These two plants contain several secondary metabolite compounds such as alkaloids and flavonoids. From previous research, these metabolite compounds can be used as cough medicine. Modified kitchen lemongrass (Cymbopogon citratus) and basil (Ocimum basilicum) plants can be processed into cough syrup in several stages to meet safety standards for human consumption. One of them is a toxicity test. The aim of this research was to determine the toxic effects and LD50 value of lemongrass (Cymbopogon citratus) and basil (Ocimum basilicum) extract cough syrup. This research was carried out by giving syrup preparations to test animals with varying doses used of 5, 50, 300 and 2000mg/Kg BW. The results of this research are that cough syrup preparations from the kitchen lemongrass (Cymbopogon citratus) and basil (Ocimum basilicum) plants were unable to kill test animals at the highest dose of 2000mg/Kg, and only gave slight toxic effects such as weakness and tremors at a dose of 2000mg/Kg. . The results of the LD50 value from research on cough syrup preparations from the kitchen lemongrass (Cymbopogon citratus) plant are apparent LD50 > 2000mg/Kg.
