Abstract
The process of making LPG gas with the base material of SG 295 steel requires a process with the right working parameters in this case is the process of joining with Metal Active Gas (MAG) welding. Tensile strength and toughness are the main indicators in determining the quality of the SG295 steel joint using the MAG process which is influenced by several parameters in the working process including current strength, welding voltage, wire feeder speed, gas flow rate, type of electrode, type of seam, seam angle, and welding angle. This research was conducted to determine the effect of variations in the current and angle of MAG welding on the tensile strength and toughness of SG295 steel. The test results in this study showed that the tensile strength with the largest average value was on the specimen with welding treatment using a large variation of the welding current of 85 A and the welding angle of 600 and 900, namely 6.08 N/mm2. This increase in tensile strength was identified due to the uniform heating of the base metal and wire used. Even heating causes the formed metal structure to be good or an even grain boundary is formed on the welding result. The value of fracture strength (J) and the highest value of toughness were on specimens with a welding current of 85 A and a welding angle of 900, namely 128.97 Joules and 6.08 Joules/mm2. It is analyzed that the heat is equal between the parent metal being welded due to the precise use of amperes and welding angle, the weld mold formed in the welding process is more effective so that the metal structure is formed more evenly.
