Abstract

This research aimed to determine the correlation between (1) vocabulary mastery and the skill of narrative text writing, (2) learning motivation and the skill of narrative text writing, and (3) both vocabulary mastery and learning motivation together and the skill of narrative text writing. The research was conducted at MTs. AI ATTANWIR Bojonegoro, from January to June 2021. The research method used was a correlational survey. The results of the study show that: (1) there is a positive correlation between vocabulary mastery and the skill of narrative text writing (r = 0.52 at the significance level α = 0.05, with N = 63, r = 0.244, and t1 > tt), (2) there is a positive correlation between learning motivation and the skill of narrative text writing (r = 0.25 at the significance level α = 0.05, with N = 63, r = 0.244, and t2 > tt), and (3) there is a positive correlation between both vocabulary mastery and learning motivation together and the skill of narrative text writing (r = 0.53 at the significance level α = 0.05, with N = 63, r = 0.244, and Fh > Ft). The above results show that both vocabulary mastery and learning motivation simultaneously make a significant contribution to the skill of narrative text writing (amounting to 28.09%). This means that both variables could be good predictors for the skill of narrative text writing.
