ANALYZING DEIXIS OF ENGLISH SPEECH BY KIM NAMJOON (BTS) AT THE UNITED NATIONS

Humans are social creatures who must interact with each other in fulfilling various needs of life. Human are able to interact with other by using language and communication. This research aimed to examine various kinds of deixis and to determine the meaning of deixis used in Kim Namjoon's speech. This research used Stephen C. Levinson Theory and used descriptive qualitative method with content analysis approach. The data were taken from transcription the Kim Namjoon’s video that was uploaded on youtube. The finding showed that there were five types of deixis were found on video of Kim Namjoon speech. The deixis were personal, spatial, temporal, discourse and social with 129 (65.8%) of personal deixis, 15 (7.7%) of spatial deixis, 10 (5.1%) of temporal deixis, 31 (15.8%) of discourse deixis, and 11 (5.6%) of social deixis. The total number of deixis calculated from Kim Namjoon's speech was 196 deixis. Kim Namjoon’s speech by the title Speak Yourself was about encouraging young people to love themselves, find their inner voice, and dare to show themselves to the world. The significance of this research were to improve understanding of deixis and be able to provide deixis as a source, specifically the use and significance of deixis in utterances.
